In these photographs, I intended images of hands as a dramatic surrogate for the self and mystic spirit. I was interested in the idea that photography could be useful in a spiritual quest as had been taught and demonstrated by Minor White. The Hand Series and subsequent Special Process photographs were my personal investigation into using a photographic practice for this purpose.

The Hand Series photographs are 11"×14" gelatin-silver prints.

The Oakland Museum of California acquired a set of these photographs and has often placed them on display. A print of Hand Series No. 9 was purchased by Ansel Adams for his personal collection and is now in the collection of the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson. The same image was exhibited and awarded a coupé plate at the Musée Francais de la Photographie, Bievres, France.
